Relating Well

I’ve heard it said, “God wants a personal relationship with me” but what exactly does that mean?  Lets be honest, this “relationship” is like no other I have.  For starters, God is invisible and far different from me.  If God does offer a relationship, how am I to relate to him?  Is He my invisible buddy that grants me good parking spots?  Is he the old man in the sky falling asleep while I ask a question?  Or is relating to God something all together different?

“Can anyone hide in secret places so that I cannot see him?”  Declares the Lord.  “Do not I fill heaven and earth?”  Declares the Lord.(1)

God is immanent.  He is active and present.  He is all around us so I don’t have to shout or repeat “in Jesus’ name” eight times to get his attention.  He is present in nature, humans, and history.  However, relating to God is more than hugging a tree or rolling around in my yard.  God is more.

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” Declares the Lord.  “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”(2)

God is transcendent.  He is outside of creation.  He is above and beyond this world.  He is a being unique from nature and unrestricted by time or space.  He is holy other.  However, relating to God is more than throwing a coin in a wishing well.  Sometimes I wonder if he is a clockmaker who winded up a watch and just lets it run until the battery dies.  But God is more.

See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.(3)

God is our Father.  He dares to relate to us intimately.  He is not just observing his creation, but actually likes us.  He enjoys hearing from us.  He is approachable and even runs to hold us as we make our way home.  He has emotion and is relatable.  However, God is more than a Dad who makes me pizza while I talk his ear off.  God is more.

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?(4)

God is >.  He is bigger than me.  He is greater.  I will never completely understand him.  He is a divine mystery and this evokes a reverence and holy fear.  He is unfathomable and this grows a sense of awe and wonder.  He is not a formula I can solve or an equation I can master.  This relationship will never get boring or predictable.  I kneel to worship because he is even more than all of this.

This is a relationship that will take a lifetime to grow.  May you sense his nearness and uniqueness.  May you fear him and befriend him.  May you laugh and worship.  May he hear you and may you hear him today.  May he become even more to you.
